I don't understand how one's race could even be overemphasized in the first place. Moreover, to take pride in your ethnicity is in no way narcissistic! Culture is not based around an individual, it's a whole group of people therefore it's in no way self oriented. Why should we even have to speak about our character? Does it not come out through observation of how we react to things throughout the day and what we say without trying to directly pinpoint our characteristics?
Pragers view on the education seems quite unusual to me however some aspects I can understand. He proposes that we not implement any sort of political matters into the education. I think this would ultimately lead to a large portion of the students having no sense of nationalism or understanding of the law. I think it's incredibly detrimental to be oblivious to the laws one must abide by and those that protect them. Although, at the same time, it seems smart to base the school system on academics, however, once more students are cut of from more abstract ideas
There is no doubt that it's possible to teach in this manner, but is it right, safe? To be blind of all that the world of education has to offer seems to me as counterproductive. Yes you'll be smart academically, but in what will you implement these skills?
I agree with the thought that Prager is seemingly racist as he would like all of the students to basically forget their ethnicity and be, what he calls, american. Part of being american is about having pride in our country and not underminig our country's values. He says that the school will be guided by "e pluribus unum", or "from many one", that doesn't mean that everyone has to be the same as Prager believes.
ReplyDeletedoes prager say anything that you do agree with? I understand why you feel the way you do,so if he where to alter his speech and policies would you be more likely to agree?
ReplyDeleteTo Kyle. Well yeah, of course. I'm not disagreeing simply due to the fact that I'm not fond of his attitude. I merely don't think his stand points are all that justified. To manipulate a school system to where it erases the outside world is just bizarre.
ReplyDeleteDoes this count Mrs. McCarthy? I know it has to be on somebody else's but I responded to what somebody else said..
I agree with Earl about this because i feel that saying we shouldn't be teaching or learning about other cultures is just a dumb thing to do. If we did do what Mr. Prager wanted then we would just be completely wiping other cultures and other societies out of the big picture. This is a world in which we all live, we all share this planet, we all share natural resources, so why cant we share and learn about others cutures? We might be different by where we were brought up in life and where we have lived but looking at the big picture we are all one, and that is, a human.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh..this is what I love. Yes, he that goes by the name of "Earl"; this counts....
ReplyDeleteI think that the main thing that Prager fails to consider is the ability for young people to learn about other cultures, ethnicities, languages, etc... through other young people. I think he falsely assumes that the only way to teach you guys is in the classroom with a teacher in front telling you guys what to think; however, I think that we all--myself included--learn best through other people, not necessarily instructors.
I think one of the best conversations we had was after we read "Museum Indians" and you guys talked about how quickly one can lose their cultural identity in an attempt to assimilate. I loved hearing your thoughts on culture, identity and what those terms even mean...
Will, I agree that our character is completely based on observation of disposition, demeanor and academic performance, and I don't think Prager is saying we can show this in any other way; in fact, I think he's DEMANDING we SHOW who we are rather than speak it, wear it, etc...
How often do you feel like you have to PROVE who you are in spite of the box someone's put you in because of preconceived notions of your social class, race, gender, etc...? Do you think teachers say, "God, I really thought that because he comes from a good family who lives in Marsh Oaks, whose parents are still together, who wears the right clothes and says 'Yes Ma'am' that he would be an A student," OR "Wow, he's pretty smart and eloquent for a black student from the projects," as if all of the labels put on you should place you somewhere? Because some teachers are just as guilty of labeling you all as you are to label yourselves and each other (not necessarily saying any of you)...
I think Prager is admonishing teachers in this, as well. I think he's saying that "the people who have it all backwards" isn't you guys, but the people who set the example for the kind of person you should be. What do you think?
But people know where there from they know there culture so I don't see how if something is taught to someone for a semester maybe two will change someones culture. It will change how thy view the world but I dont feel it will change there culture or there way of life
